In 1311 Richard de Wingfield was granted for life the deer parks and woods of Framlingham Castle by the Chamberlain (John de Uffeton) of Roger Bigod, Earl of Norfolk. Framlingham is a magnificent late 12th-century castle, its striking outline reflected in the nearby mere. Surrounded by parkland and estates, it was once at the centre of a vast network of power and influence. Framlingham Castle dates back to the 12th century so there is more to its history than Bloody Mary. It has been owned by some of the most powerful families in the region. The castle was built by the Bigods, a powerful Norman family. In 1213 Roger Bigod II entertained King John at the castle.
